Red in Big Blue reflects Story’s strong art historical appreciation in that it recalls past artists’ dedication to the majesty of the landscape. Like Caspar David Friedrich or Thomas Cole, here Story scales his work to make his swimmer seemingly a small bobber in the vastness of the ocean. Instead of isolating, however, this composition conveys a sense of comfort, as if this figure is as one with the water.
