Arguably one of Story’s most Baroque- inspired compositions in the series, Yellow Back Cross reveals an adept manipulation of the age-old technique of tenebrism: whereas past masters, such as Caravaggio, conjured abrupt contrasts between highlight and shadow, here Story challenges himself to work in a darker palette yet maintain subtle tonal transitions. Intriguingly, the brightest spot of the painting appears in the figure’s reflection, amplifying the viewer’s curiosity about this environment.
