Striped Layback on Black pits vibrant color against deep black waters to play with the viewer’s understanding of the painted surface. Rivaling the Baroque use of tenebrism, here Story’s free-floating figure seems wholly weightless in her environment to convey a sense of almost divinely inspired relaxation.
